Foundation Board of Directors

Pete Johnson

Pete Johnson is from the Midwest, growing up in Illinois and Minnesota.  After graduating from Mankato State University in Minnesota, his first job out of college brought him to Helena in 1979.  After two and a half years with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis (Helena office) he began work at American Federal Savings and Loan Association, which eventually became Opportunity Bank of Montana.  Pete worked there for 41 years, retiring as CEO at the end of 2022.  He now serves on the board of directors of the bank.

He previously served on the Open Space Bond Advisory Committee and the board of the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce.  Pete currently serves on the Diocese of Helena Finance Council and the Board of Trustees of the Montana Historical Society.  He enjoys golf, baseball and football.

Pete and his wife Mechille have four daughters and six grandchildren.  They travel to visit them as often as possible.  They enjoy the splendid views from their home in Montana City.

After graduating from Leadership Montana in 2017, Pete was motivated to serve on a community board, and chose St. Peter’s Health Foundation.  Having previously served on St. Peter’s system board he knew of the great work of the Foundation and wanted to support its mission of supporting exceptional and compassionate care for our community’s health and well-being.  Pete and Mechille have a particularly strong interest in improving access to mental and behavioral health.
